Montecarlo, Argentina - The United States Women's National Fistball started off strong Friday morning with a convincing 3:0 (11:4, 11:4, 11:6) over Colombia. The win put the Americans in second place in Group C and set up a cross-over match with the third-place finisher in Group B, New Zealand.
Despite a short history in women's international fistball, the United States and New Zealand have established a respectful rivalry going back to the 2022 World Games which saw a hotly contested scrimmage and an intense 5th place match between the two sides that went five sets.
The two familiar foes faced off later on Friday afternoon with a quarterfinal sport on the line and a possible World Games quota. Like the previous showdown between the two sides, the match took place under the blistering sun, despite playing hard, the Kiwis showed that they have improved much since the last time these two teams met and defeated the U.S. 3:0 (11:5, 11:8, 11:6) victory over the Americans.
With the loss to New Zealand, the Americans have been relegated to the Placement Round Group with Colombia and Australia. The teams will play a round-robin against each other to determine World Championship places 9 - 11. The U.S. will face Colombia again on Saturday, November 9, at 1 p.m. local time (11 a.m. EST), followed by their first-ever matchup against Australia on Sunday, November 10, at 10 a.m. local time (8 a.m. EST). Both matches will be streamed live on fistball.tv, so fans can continue to support the team’s journey remotely.
